The exact equipment depends on the services offered, cleaning method, access to customer utilities, available vehicle capacity, and whether the detailer operates a self-contained setup. Professional mobile detailing does not require one standardized inventory or a dedicated van full of machinery.

Not every mobile detailer uses every tool. Water tanks and generators may be unnecessary when suitable customer utilities are available, while extractors, steamers, and polishers are relevant only when the booked detailing package uses those processes.
The practical relationship is simple:

The International Detailing Association (IDA) identifies equipment categories including pressure washers, hot-water extractors, dry-vapor steamers, rotary polishers, dual-action polishers, and wet/dry vacuums in its professional detailing resources. That does not mean every mobile detailer needs to own every machine.
What Exterior Detailing Equipment Do Mobile Detailers Use?
Exterior mobile-detailing equipment supports washing, product application, wheel cleaning, drying, and package-dependent decontamination.
A conventional rinse wash, rinseless wash, and paint-decontamination service do not necessarily require the same equipment.
Pressure washer
A pressure washer delivers pressurized water through a hose and nozzle. It can support exterior rinsing and wheel-cleaning processes, and the IDA includes pressure washers among recognized detailing-equipment categories. Pressure, water flow, nozzle selection, and working distance are separate variables, so there is no single PSI or GPM specification that defines professional mobile detailing.
Foam cannon or pump sprayer
These tools apply cleaning products to vehicle surfaces. A foam cannon normally operates with a compatible pressure-washer system, while a pump sprayer can apply solution independently. Foam or chemical application should not be confused with actually removing contamination from the surface.
Hose
A hose connects the available water source to compatible wash equipment:

The configuration can differ depending on whether water comes from an onboard tank or a customer water hookup.
Wash buckets
Buckets hold wash or rinse solution during contact-washing methods that use them. A two-bucket setup is one possible process, but it is not a universal requirement for professional detailing.
Wash mitts
Wash media provides controlled physical contact with the vehicle during a contact wash. The appropriate material depends on the cleaning method and surface condition rather than one mitt material being universally suitable for every vehicle.
Wheel and tire brushes
Different brushes can be assigned to wheel faces, wheel barrels, tires, and smaller detailing areas. Highly contaminated wheel and tire equipment should be managed separately from paint-contact tools to reduce cross-contamination. Brush and chemical compatibility also depends on the wheel finish being treated.
Microfiber drying towels
Drying towels remove water remaining after rinse-based washing. They are one drying method rather than a mandatory component of every exterior-cleaning process.
Clay bar or synthetic clay
Clay media mechanically removes suitable bonded contamination that remains after washing.
Washing → decontamination → paint assessment
Clay treatment is not paint correction, and not every exterior detail requires mechanical decontamination; the broader detailing vs. car wash distinction also separates routine washing from decontamination and polishing.
Air blower
Moving air can remove trapped water from mirrors, grilles, seams, trim gaps, and other difficult-to-reach areas. It can supplement or replace some towel drying depending on the process being used.
Where vehicle wash-water runoff is relevant, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidance recognizes that wash water can carry pollutants into stormwater systems. The applicable containment, recovery, and drainage requirements depend on the site and local regulations.
What Interior Detailing Equipment Do Mobile Detailers Use?
Interior detailing equipment progresses from loose-debris removal to increasingly targeted material and contamination treatment.
Vacuum = removes loose debris
Extractor = applies and recovers cleaning liquid from compatible carpets and upholstery
Steamer = applies heated vapor or moisture for compatible surfaces, crevices, and targeted cleaning
Wet/dry vacuum
A wet/dry vacuum removes loose dirt, sand, hair, and debris from accessible carpet, mats, seats, cargo areas, seams, and crevices. The IDA includes wet/dry vacuums among professional detailing equipment. Vacuuming should remain separate from stain treatment or liquid extraction because suctioning loose debris does not by itself deep-clean textile fibers.
Carpet extractor
A carpet extractor applies cleaning solution to compatible textiles and uses vacuum suction to recover moisture and loosened soil.
Steam cleaner
A steam cleaner produces heated vapor or steam for compatible surfaces and targeted cleaning. The IDA recognizes dry-vapor steamers as a detailing-equipment category.
Detailing brushes
Interior brushes help agitate or remove contamination from vents, controls, trim, seams, cup holders, carpet, and other small areas. Brush selection should match the material being cleaned rather than using one brush indiscriminately throughout the interior.
Microfiber towels
Microfiber towels can be assigned to wiping, product removal, glass cleaning, and surface drying. Separating towels by task helps prevent contamination from being transferred between surfaces.
As a measurable equipment example, the Mytee 8070 Lite is specified with approximately 15.1-L solution and recovery tanks, 100 CFM airflow, 130 inches of water lift, a 120-PSI pump, and a 1,000-W heater. These are model-specific specifications, not minimum requirements for professional detailing.
The measurements describe different machine characteristics: CFM measures airflow, water lift is a suction-related measurement, pump pressure describes liquid delivery, tank capacity describes fluid storage, and heater wattage describes the electrical heating system. CFM and water lift should not be treated as interchangeable measurements.
Extraction is also material-dependent. It should not automatically be used on every seat material, headliner, or textile surface.
For example, Kärcher’s SGV 8/5 combines steam cleaning with wet vacuuming and is specified at up to 8 bar steam pressure with approximately 70°C hot-water temperature. Those figures apply to that particular machine rather than defining all automotive steam cleaners.
Using a steam cleaner also does not automatically establish that a surface has been sanitized, disinfected, sterilized, or that a specific percentage of microorganisms has been killed. Those are separate performance claims requiring evidence for the particular machine and process.
Compressed air or air blower
Moving air can dislodge loose debris, move particles out of seams and crevices, and assist with drying. Appropriate pressure and nozzle selection depend on the equipment and surface.
Drill brushes
Powered brushes can provide mechanical agitation on compatible materials. They should not be used indiscriminately on screens, delicate trim, headliners, sensitive upholstery, or gloss-finished surfaces.
What Equipment Is Used for Paint Correction and Finishing?
Paint-correction equipment is used only when the booked service includes abrasive paint refinement; it is not required for routine interior or exterior detailing.
Dual-action polisher
A dual-action or random-orbital polishing machine combines orbital movement with pad rotation, depending on the system. Manufacturers such as RUPES produce professional random-orbital machines specifically for automotive paint refinement.
Inspection light
Inspection lighting does not correct paint. It improves visibility of swirls, scratches, polishing residue, haze, and the resulting finish so the technician can assess the surface between stages.
A DA polisher does not simply “remove scratches.” More accurately, it can reduce eligible paint defects when paired with the appropriate pad, abrasive, technique, and paint condition.
Rotary polisher
A rotary polisher uses direct rotational movement. The IDA recognizes rotary polishers as professional detailing equipment, and automotive refinishing manufacturers also produce rotary systems for paint correction. A rotary polisher is not automatically superior to a DA polisher and is not required for every professional correction process.
Polishing pads
The polishing pad forms the working interface between the machine, abrasive product, and painted surface. Different pad constructions can provide different cutting and finishing characteristics. Pad colors should not be treated as universal classifications because manufacturers use different color systems.
Compounds and polishes
Compounds and polishes are abrasive finishing products used with suitable pads and polishing machines. Professional finishing systems from manufacturers such as 3M combine polishers, abrasives, and matching pads as part of a controlled process.
Compound/polish ≠ paint protection
Abrasive paint refinement and applying a protective product are separate processes.
Polisher + pad + abrasive + inspection = paint-finishing system
Paint correction therefore involves more than simply owning a polishing machine. Lighting, weather, surface contamination, paint condition, electrical requirements, and the ability to inspect the finish can also determine whether a particular mobile location is appropriate for correction work.
Do Mobile Detailers Need Their Own Water and Power?
No. Mobile detailers can carry their own water and electricity or use utilities supplied by the customer.
Mobile ≠ automatically self-contained
The appropriate utility model depends on the provider’s setup, equipment load, cleaning method, customer property, and available utilities.
Water options
Onboard water tank
A water tank stores water within the mobile setup, reducing dependence on a customer water hookup. The tradeoff is that a tank also consumes vehicle space and payload capacity. Carrying fresh water should not be confused with recovering or managing wastewater.
Customer water hookup
Using customer-supplied water is a legitimate mobile-detailing operating model where a suitable connection is available and its use is permitted by both the property owner and the service provider.
Rinseless or low-water cleaning methods
Some cleaning methods reduce water demand and therefore change the equipment a mobile detailer needs. Rinseless washing still uses water; it should not be confused with a completely water-free process.
If runoff is generated, EPA guidance recognizes that vehicle wash water can transport contaminants into stormwater systems. Appropriate management depends on the site and applicable local requirements rather than one universal containment system.
Power options
Generator
A generator produces portable electricity for equipment when independent power is required. Its capacity should be evaluated against the actual connected equipment load rather than selecting one universal generator wattage.
Battery/inverter power system
A battery-based system stores electrical energy and supplies compatible equipment, usually through an inverter where AC power is required. Runtime depends on battery storage, inverter capacity, and connected load.
Customer electrical outlet
A suitable customer outlet can also power mobile-detailing equipment when permitted and when the circuit and equipment load are compatible.
Electrical equipment should be supported by appropriately rated, intact cords and suitable protection around wet or damp environments. OSHA guidance emphasizes proper extension-cord use and GFCI protection in applicable conditions. OSHA also warns against generator overloading and generator operation in enclosed areas because of carbon-monoxide hazards.
What Equipment Does a Beginner Mobile Detailer Need?
A beginner mobile detailer should define the services being sold first and then buy the smallest equipment system capable of performing those services correctly.
The IDA recognizes many of the major machine categories used in professional detailing, but that does not create one mandatory beginner equipment kit.
Basic setup
A basic setup should cover the processes already included in the beginner’s service menu.
Wet/dry vacuum
Add a wet/dry vacuum when interior services include removing loose debris from carpet, mats, seats, and crevices.
Pressure washer or suitable wash system
Exterior services require a suitable cleaning system, but that does not automatically mean a pressure washer. A detailer using an appropriate rinseless process will have different equipment requirements from one performing conventional pressure-assisted washes.
Buckets and wash mitts
These are relevant when the chosen contact-washing process uses them. A professional setup does not have to follow one universal bucket configuration.
Brushes
Buy brushes according to function: interior cleaning, wheels and tires, and smaller detail or crevice work. There is little benefit in purchasing dozens of specialized brushes before the service menu creates a need for them.
Microfiber towels
A beginner should have enough towels to separate major jobs such as paint cleaning, interior wiping, glass work, drying, and heavily contaminated areas.
Hoses
Hoses are required where a tank or customer connection supplies water-based equipment.
Extension cords
Extension cords are needed for corded electrical equipment and should be appropriately rated for the connected equipment and operating environment.
Sprayers
Sprayers provide controlled application of compatible cleaning products.
Basic interior-cleaning tools
Crevice attachments, applicators, small brushes, and towels can handle many routine interior tasks without immediately requiring specialized machinery.
Basic equipment should cover the services already offered; specialized machines should follow service expansion.

Carpet extractor
Add an extractor when the service menu includes liquid extraction from compatible carpets or upholstery.
Steam cleaner
Add a steamer when steam-based treatment becomes part of the service and is appropriate for the materials being cleaned.
Air compressor
Add compressed-air equipment when the process provides enough value to justify the additional space, power demand, hose management, noise, and equipment cost.
DA polisher
Add a dual-action polisher when paint enhancement or correction becomes a booked service. The machine should be added together with suitable pads, abrasives, and inspection capability rather than purchased in isolation.
Inspection lighting
Appropriate lighting becomes more important as the business adds paint-finishing work because the technician needs to evaluate defects and the resulting finish.
Water tank
Add a tank when reducing dependence on customer-supplied water becomes operationally valuable.
Generator or battery system
Add independent electrical power when the business needs it, with the system sized according to the actual equipment demand.
Do not buy an extractor, steamer, polisher, tank, or generator simply because another detailer owns one. Add the equipment when a service or operating requirement creates the need for it.
What Equipment Is Optional for Mobile Car Detailing?
Optional equipment becomes necessary only when a booked service or operating model requires the function that equipment provides.
Water tank
A tank remains optional when suitable customer water is part of the operating model. It becomes useful when greater water independence is required.
Generator
A generator is optional when suitable electricity comes from a customer outlet, battery/inverter system, or another appropriate source. Portable generation becomes relevant when independent power must support the actual electrical load.
Carpet extractor
An extractor is optional unless the business offers an extraction process. The IDA recognizes hot-water extractors as professional detailing equipment, but that does not mean every detailer must own one.
Steam cleaner
A steamer is optional unless steam-based treatment is actually part of the service. A “deep interior detail” does not automatically require steam.
Rotary polisher
A rotary is optional according to the technician’s paint-finishing system and method. Professional detailing resources recognize both rotary and dual-action machines without making ownership of both a requirement.
Paint-depth gauge
A paint-depth gauge is an assessment tool used in more advanced paint evaluation. A thickness measurement can provide additional information about the surface, but one reading by itself does not determine whether a paint defect can be safely corrected.
Water-reclamation equipment
Depending on the operating environment, runoff-management equipment can include containment mats, berms, drain blockers, recovery vacuums, or pumps. EPA guidance supports protecting stormwater systems from vehicle-wash pollutants where applicable, but this does not establish one reclamation system that every U.S. mobile detailer must own.
Trailer or dedicated detailing van
Neither a trailer nor a dedicated detailing van is required to operate a mobile-detailing business. A dedicated platform can become more useful as equipment volume, onboard water, independent power, storage requirements, and workflow complexity increase.
